The Best Halloween Movies For The Whole Family 🎃

Halloween is one of my absolute favorite times of the year. The costumes, the candy, the crisp air, and, of course, the movies! There’s nothing like cozying up with the family, grabbing some popcorn (and candy, because we’re festive here!), and watching a Halloween movie that’s more giggles than gore. I’m all about creating family-friendly Halloween traditions, so let’s dive into my list of must-watch spooky movies that everyone in the family can enjoy – Disney classics included!

Sanderson Sisters - Hocus Pocus

1. Hocus Pocus (1993)

Rating: PG

Is it even Halloween if you don’t watch Hocus Pocus? This Disney classic is a total vibe with its witchy shenanigans, a talking cat, and, of course, the Sanderson sisters. The movie is just spooky enough to get everyone in the Halloween spirit, but funny enough that the kids won’t be running to hide under the covers. And who doesn't go around singing "I'll put a spell on you" all October long?! Just me?! OK, fine.

Jack Skellington - Nightmare Before Christmas

2. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Rating: PG

Ah, Jack Skellington – the Pumpkin King himself! Is it a Halloween movie? Is it a Christmas movie? I say, why choose when you can watch it twice?! This Tim Burton classic has all the spooky fun of Halloween Town, with some Christmas cheer thrown in. The animation is so unique and whimsical, and the soundtrack? Perfection! If your family loves a little musical magic like mine, The Nightmare Before Christmas is an absolute must-watch.

Mowry Twins - Twitches

3. Twitches (2005)

Rating: TV-PG

Twin witches? Yes, please! Twitches follows sisters who were separated at birth and later discover their magical powers. Think of the Parent Trap but with magic! It’s perfect for those who love a good witch story but want something family-friendly. Starring Tia and Tamera Mowry, this Disney Channel classic has plenty of magic, adventure, and a great sisterly bond.

CoCo Movie

4. Coco (2017)

Rating: PG

Now, this one’s not exactly a Halloween movie, but it celebrates Día de los Muertos, which is right around the same time – so I say it counts! Coco is a heartwarming story that’s full of colorful visuals, great music, and a beautiful message about family. It’s the perfect choice if you’re in the mood for something with a bit of a different flavor than the usual Halloween fare, but still magical and meaningful. This feel good movie is one of favorites all year round thanks to the awesome celebration of culture!

Mosters Inc

5. Monsters, Inc. (2001)

Rating: G

Who knew monsters could be this cute? Monsters, Inc. may not be super Halloween-y, but with all the monsters and their adorable attempts at being scary, it’s definitely a great choice for younger kids who might not be ready for witches and skeletons. The story of Sulley and Mike Wazowski is full of laughs, adventure, and lots of heart – perfect for a light-hearted Halloween movie night.

Halloweentown

6. Halloweentown (1998)

Rating: TV-G

Disney Channel fans, rejoice! Halloweentown is an absolute classic when it comes to family Halloween movies. With witches, spells, and a magical town where every day is Halloween, it’s such a fun world to get lost in. Plus, it has some valuable messages about family, courage, and embracing who you are. This one is so nostalgic – it takes me right back to those Disney Channel Original Movie marathons!

Casper Movie

7. Casper (1995)

Rating: PG

If you’re looking for a gentle ghost story, Casper is the way to go. This movie is full of charm, with Casper, the friendliest ghost, who just wants to make some new friends. It’s spooky but sweet, with just the right amount of 90s nostalgia thrown in. Plus, it has a fun haunted mansion setting that’s perfect for Halloween vibes without being too scary. And what millennial mom wasn't in love Devon Sawa and doesn't still quote "Can I keep you"?

Frankenweenie

8. Frankenweenie (2012)

Rating: PG

For those who love a bit of Tim Burton quirkiness, Frankenweenie is a great family pick. This sweet movie follows a young boy who brings his beloved dog back to life, Frankenstein-style. It’s a cute take on classic monster movies, and the black-and-white animation is a fun throwback to vintage horror films. Kids will love the adorable Sparky, and parents can appreciate the heartwarming story underneath all the spookiness.

Coraline Movie

9. Coraline (2009)

Rating: PG

Now, I’ll be honest – Coraline is a little on the spookier side! Based on the book by Neil Gaiman, it follows a girl who discovers a parallel world that seems perfect at first… until things get a little creepy. With stop-motion animation and a captivating storyline, Coraline is perfect for older kids who enjoy a bit of mystery and a good (mild) scare.

And there's our go-to Halloween family movie list! Whether you’re into witches, monsters, or sweet ghosts, there’s something here for everyone. With these movies and a few fun, festive snacks, you’ll be all set for the coziest, spookiest, and most magical Halloween family movie night ever. Happy Halloween! 🎃👻🍬
