If you've never been to the Fox Theater in Atlanta, let me tell you: it's an absolute gem. Walking in feels like entering a glamorous, vintage wonderland where every corner shimmers with art-deco charm. And what better way to experience it than by seeing Wicked, the musical that takes you back to Oz and flips everything you thought you knew about the story of the Wicked Witch?
I was lucky enough to snag tickets to Wicked during its Atlanta run. Ray and I made an entire evening of it, turning it into a night out with Korean BBQ and lots of laughs. If you’re considering catching Wicked at the Fox (or anywhere, really!), here’s what made it a night to remember and why you should add it to your bucket list.
The Fox Theater’s Spellbinding Atmosphere
When you walk up to the Fox Theater, the exterior already sets the tone with its stunning marquee lights and architecture that feels part-palace, part-movie magic. Inside, every detail—from the grandiose ceiling to the intricate murals and twinkling lights—makes you feel like you’re in a different era. It’s as if the theater itself wants to give you a little taste of magic even before the show begins. And then, sitting there in the audience, surrounded by that rich history, you just know something unforgettable is about to happen!

First Impressions: The Music, the Costumes, and the Wow Factor
I’m going to be honest: Wicked has a way of sweeping you off your feet from the very first note. From "No One Mourns the Wicked" to “Defying Gravity,” every song left me with chills. The music, by Stephen Schwartz, feels like its own character—empowering, emotional, and sometimes just plain fun.
And those costumes? Iconic. I was blown away by the sheer detail, especially Elphaba’s emerald-green dress, which glittered under the stage lights. Glinda’s ensembles were, of course, as extra as you’d hope, with all the sparkle and poof to match her big personality. Seeing these characters come to life on stage, especially against the stunning set design, was like stepping into the Land of Oz itself.
The Story: A New Twist on Oz
Wicked tells the story of Elphaba (aka the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (yes, the “Good Witch”) before Dorothy and Toto’s visit. We see them as young students, complete with quirky friendships and epic rivalries. It dives deep into the “why” behind the Wicked Witch’s transformation, and the way it’s told is both heartwarming and thought-provoking. I won’t spoil anything, but by the end, I had a whole new perspective on Elphaba—and a lot more sympathy for her misunderstood character.
This version of Oz gives us a peek at what life was like before Dorothy dropped in, and it touches on friendship, self-acceptance, and the courage to stand out. There were so many moments that felt both funny and powerful; it was like a rollercoaster of emotions. I laughed, I cried (yes, I cry at musicals!), and I left feeling inspired.
The Magic of “Defying Gravity”
Let's talk about “Defying Gravity,” the showstopper that everyone raves about. Seeing it live was just… wow. As Elphaba rises above the stage, singing with all her might, you feel this rush of energy. The whole theater seemed to hold its breath, and when the song ended, the applause was thunderous. It’s one of those musical moments that’s even better live, with the lights, effects, and sheer talent coming together in a way that gives you goosebumps.
Tips for Enjoying Wicked at the Fox Theater
If you’re planning to see Wicked or any big show at the Fox Theater, here are a few tips to make your night out even better:
Arrive Early: The Fox has so much character, and arriving early gives you time to explore. Snap a few photos under the marquee outside and take a walk through the beautiful lobby.
Dress to Impress: There’s something special about dressing up for a night at the theater. I saw so many people in cute outfits, and it made the evening feel like a true event.
Grab a Souvenir: I couldn’t resist grabbing a Wicked playbill and a tiny Glinda keychain as keepsakes. They make for fun mementos of the night!

Why Wicked Is a Must-See
Seeing Wicked at the Fox Theater was hands-down one of my favorite musical experiences. Between the dazzling Fox Theater backdrop, the incredible cast, and a story that pulls you in from start to finish, it’s a night I’ll never forget. Whether you’re a die-hard Oz fan or just love a good musical with heart, Wicked is pure magic.
So, if Wicked swings back through Atlanta (or lands at a theater near you!), grab your tickets and get ready for a show that’ll have you cheering, tearing up, and maybe even feeling a bit more “green” in the best way possible!
