And Just Like That...Sex & The City is Back!

In a world where Y2K fashion is trending on TikTok and Steve from Blue’s Clues has made a tear-jerking comeback, it was only right that we’d be reintroduced to our favorite NYC crew: Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte. Sex and the City was my absolute style bible, my go-to comfort watch, and the reason I felt bold enough to start a blog of my own. So when I found out about the reboot, it shot to the top of my must-watch list for 2021. And let me tell you… the first two episodes were a whirlwind. I’m still processing, even days later!

MAJOR SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD
You’ve been warned – if you’re ready to dive into the highs, lows, and heartbreak of the Sex and the City reboot with me, let’s get to it!
1. The Absence of Samantha Jones

Let’s be real – Samantha Jones is the friend we all want. The one who tells it like it is and keeps the party going. Her absence was deeply felt, and while I get the drama with Kim Cattrall and SJP (the real-life drama, not the fictional one), the way they wrote her out just didn’t sit right with me.
The story? She was cut as Carrie’s agent, and apparently, that’s the reason for her exit. But if we know anything about Samantha, she went above and beyond for Carrie for years – and money never got in the way. This is the woman who literally volunteered her PR expertise and was her fiercest advocate. I wish they’d found another way to explain her absence.
My only solace? Samantha’s “presence” when she sent flowers to Big’s funeral. It was classic Samantha: supportive from afar, showing up in her own fabulous way.
2. Goodbye, Mr. Big

No twist could have prepared me for this one. Watching Mr. Big, Carrie’s ultimate love and the man who’d both driven her crazy and kept her sane, die in the first two episodes was just… devastating. I know some people will say he hurt her too many times, or that his flaws were too much, but that’s what made their love story feel real to me.
They didn’t have a perfect relationship, but they kept choosing each other, flaws and all. And he had the audacity to die after one last workout on the Peloton. Heartbreaking! (And yes, I blame Lily for not giving Carrie her phone sooner. Too harsh? Maybe.)
I don’t know about you, but when Carrie lost Big, I felt like I lost a little bit of the NYC magic that he embodied. And seeing her grieving him alone, without Samantha, just made it that much harder.
(please note that this is about the character NOT the actor)
3. Willie Garson’s Legacy as Stanford Blatch

Watching Stanford, who was just as funny, sassy, and lovable as ever, was incredibly bittersweet, especially knowing Willie Garson’s recent passing. His on-screen chemistry with Anthony brought so much laughter to the show. They weren’t exactly the world’s most loving couple, but their dynamic added a refreshing, funny edge.
Stanford’s quips and humor brought so much lightness to SATC, and knowing this is the last time we’ll see him on screen? It’s rough. I know I’ll be treasuring every scene he has in this reboot and feeling the heartbreak of his loss in every episode.
And so, as I sat there in my comfy sweats, still reeling from the rollercoaster of those first two episodes, feeling like I’d lost a friend, a husband (RIP Big), and the forever fabulous Samantha, I couldn’t help but wonder – is it time to book an extra therapy session?
I think we know the answer to that one.
Until next time! 💖
